Earth Mode Plug-In for Earth Day
Posted on 04-18-2017
Earth Day is April 22nd, and people around the world are encouraged to think about and find ways to reduce their carbon footprint and invest in Mother Earth. In 2016, Johnnie Walker® partnered with Earth Day Network to develop a way to track a person's online useage called Earth Mode Plug-In. When you use a website or search online it takes a lot of energy to load that information. People don't realize how much of a carbon footprint they are leaving by their online useage.
When you download Chrome's Earth Mode plug-in, your online useage from streaming videos to updating your social media status will be tracked to give you a look at your carbon footprint. The plug-in measures online useage over a four-week period then calculates a user's annual online use. To counteract the size of that carbon footprint, Johnnie Walker® will plant the number of trees needed to offset the environmental harm by up to 75,000 trees as part of Earth Day Network's Canopy Project.
If you haven't downloaded Chrome's Earth Mode plug-in, let this Earth Day be a time to do it and to get your family, friends and co-workers to do the same. This tool can help us be aware of how much digital energy we are using and wasting, making this no longer be an out-of-sight-out-of-mind issue. When we can actually see our part in the digital carbon footprint, we will do better in cutting down on energy waste.
Happy Earth Day!
