Q & A on Electric Choice
Posted on 08-27-2014
Q. Is my current electric utility rate guaranteed?
A. No. Rates change periodically with rules specific to your local utility within the geographic area you are located.
Q. Do I have a choice to buy electricity from another company and if I do how does that work?
A. In a half dozen states including PA, OH, NY, NJ, CT, MA, MD, IL and TX, the answer is yes you can shop for electricity. In states where you belong to a cooperative or city owned electric utility you will not have a choice. The choice is to switch electric companies, that company will sell you the generation and transmission supply portion of your bill, the delivery of electricity will still be provided from the local electric company with rules specified by state legislation.
Q. What if my power goes out, who do I call?
A. In the event of a power outage, you would call your local utility, if the power outage is a result of an operational issue it’s likely you are not the only one in the dark. Always call your traditional utility company in the event of an outage.
Q. Will I receive one or two bills?
A. It depends on the utility company and the state where you live and sometimes the supplier you choose. Some states like PA and MD allow for the utility to bill the generation supply portion of the bill right on the traditional utility bill. They include a line item of the supply charges. Some suppliers will bill you for the generation supply portion of your bill and the local utility for the delivery of that generation supply, so you would receive two bills. Ask questions and read the fine print and consult an expert if you feel that you still have some questions.
Q. Does electric choice mean lower electric rates?
A. NO. Energy choice means flexibility to choose products which could result in lower electricity rates and provide budget certainty. Products range from fixed to variable options and businesses will choose those products based on their tolerance to price risk.
