Holiday Lights and Safety

Posted on 12-11-2023

It's the most wonderful time of the year, and time to put up the holiday lights.  We're bringing you some great tips for keeping your lighting and season safe and bringing some cheer to your home and business.

  1. Inspect all lights and decorations before use.  Check for frayed wires, broken bulbs, or damaged sockets, and discard any faulty items.  Opt for LED lights, known for their energy efficiency and reduced heat emission, minimizing the risk of overheating.  Ensure outdoor lights are suitable for exterior use, capable of withstanding variable weather conditions.

  2. When setting up your lights, refrain from overloading electrical outlets or using damaged extension cords.  Turn off lights when you leave the house or go to bed to prevent potential fire hazards and save on energy use.

  3. Secure decorations away from heat sources.  Keep flammable materials at a safe distance from lights.  If using a live tree, water it regularly to keep from drying out.

  4. When hanging lights, prioritize ladder safety.  Use a sturdy and secure ladder on flat ground, and have another person nearby to assist you when necessary.  Avoid overreaching as that can cause accidents.

By following these holiday light safety tips, you can create a festive and secure environment.  Let the spirit of the season shine brightly.  Merry Christmas!

The Yellowstone National Park wildfires of 1988 were estimated to have produced 77.9 billion megajoules of energy over the fire's 71-day life. The wildfires' energy was equivalent to 22 million megawatt-hours, nearly as much as California and Oregon consumed in December 2011.
